PHP5

Hi,
I have tried installing on two different web hosting sites with the same result. I get an error saying that they are using php v 4.x.xx.
What the good is this software if I can't use it on standard web hosting sites? Is there a version that will work with php4.x?
My last hope will be my mac.com webpage, but that site has been down for maint since yesterday.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Brian

PHP4 as a language, is no longer supported by the PHP developers. Any quality web host should offer PHP5, at least as an option. You can read http://gophp5.org for some more info or see http://au2.php.net/archive/2007.php for the official announcement. ProjectPier takes advantage of several of the newer features provided by PHP5, so it is a requirement to use this software.

I would suggest asking your webhost about using PHP5, it is often an option that just needs to be enabled for your account. If not, ask your host to install or upgrade to php5 and give them the links I provided.

Good luck and let us know if we can help you further.

The Indian chap at the support desk had no idea what PHP was. I have escalated the call (via email) using your detailed info - thanks!

I need a simple on line solution for a project that will only last 2 months and needs to be updated by a few people on different sides of the country. MS project is to difficult to use/coordinate.

Are you aware of any solutions for me? e.g. a simpler software program that uses PHP4?, or a free/cheap web host that will host a php5 site for a couple of months?

Thanks
Brian

Surprising that your first line of support doesn't even know what PHP is... pretty poor host/support.

As for a php5 host, you can see a list of hosts from the http://gophp5.org site or I am aware of 2 very popular shared hosting services, Dreamhost and Site5 that offer php5. Almost all of the decent sized hosts that I know of will provide it. Shared hosting should be like $5-$10/month

Hey, this post kind of makes me wonder more about an idea I had.

I really do not use my shared hosting for much else important but my PP site now. For a number of reasons I was thinking of subscribing to Apple's new mobilme service (syncing, etc.) and I was wondering if there would be any way to move my PP site so that it is hosted by Apple as part of the website space you get with the mobilme account.

I'm assuming the existence of a MySQL database and the PHP5 requirements are beyond what Apple had in mind and it is very hard to get actual information about their hosting specifications from their website. So, I was wondering if anyone here happened to know.

Thanks,
Tate.
